Ectoine for moisturising water is often used as an anti-ageing and moisturising ingredient in pre-make-up or skincare moisturisers to increase their effectiveness. Pretreating the skin with ectoine reduces skin damage caused by dehydration; one molecule of ectoine complexes four or five water molecules, structuring the free water in the cells. Ectoine is more moisturising to the skin than glycerine.
